How can this be better? This is something every photographer has asked themselves over, and over. I often ask myself this very question; but how do we find a solution? As far as photography goes, there are endless resources: blogs, classes, podcasts and more! However for us livestock photographers, resources can be few and far between. Tips & tricks can be hard to come by, so let me simplify it. Keep reading to discover five lessons I have learned along the way about photographing livestock shows.
1. Know The Show
- Know the Show Details (location, time, species, expectations)
- Find your “home base”
- Understand how the show ring is operating
Before even snapping a picture, be sure you know the show. If a jackpot, county fair, or even state show books you as their photographer, do a bit of background research. Have solid details such as location, barns, and arrival time as well as discover what information they need from you. Once you arrive, find your “home base,” the place to set your equipment and other belongings on. Whether that is next to the show ring, in a side room, or even your car. Finally, make sure you know how the show ring operates. What gate do animals enter and exit by? Introduce yourself to the judge, crew and ring help. Ask and have answers to any questions that will help you stay organized.
2. Begin with Camera Basics
- What’s your priority (shutter, aperture, ISO)
- What’s your equipment’s intention
When operating your camera, you most success will be in a manual mode. Find your priority setting, often it will be a high shutter speed. TIP: Higher shutter speed will help keep images sharp.
3. Understand Your Angles
- What angle looks best?
- Get the low angles
- Get the detailed photos
Understanding what angles look best will help you get the best images. The best way to learn what angles you enjoy most is by practice. TIP: Lower off center angles help livestock look deeper bodied and more powerful.
4. Edit in Style
- Colors should stay true
- Use your style
Editing is always according to personal preference however a good rule of thumb is to keep colors as true as possible. Whether it’s a roan shorthorn, calico crossbred, or traditional marked boar goat, colors should stay as true as possible after editing.
5. Confidence in Key
- Dress to impress
- Be confident in your ability
- Know your worth
I find that one of the best ways to be confident is to dress confidently. Have a bit of fun and dress up, but make sure you wear comfy shoes! Something I struggle with myself is knowing how much my services are worth. Be confident in your own ability!
